I would suggest setting them dark, giving them an @lock that checks for the proper status (ie, the character has 'learned' of the object and should be looking for it), and its fail message looks just like what would happen if you tried to pick something up that wasn't there. This will be painfully obvious to any players using NOSPOOF, so you may consider limiting access to that flag.
