Also, why PHP?  Why not perl?  or python?  or vbscript?  or <insert
other scripting language here> 

Despite what previously in this thread, PHP isn't the end all be all out
there(even for webpages, its popular but not THAT popular.)  Maybe if we
are really hell bent on jumping down this slope, it may be best to have
some generic interface so you can just slap ABC scripting engine in.
