Long-term, choosing not to play with them at all may yield the best
outcome. And, given that they are trying to play native code on Linux
while Microsoft plays with .Net, you would think they would want to
demonstrate the value of native code at every opportunity.
In the short-term, even the non-specialized code paths from Intel's
compiler produce better output than GCC or MSVS. That's a big
statement, and it couldn't possible be true in every single case,
however, generally speaking, the output is pretty darn nifty.
Microsoft is distracted by .NET, and in any case, they are more
concerned with the speed of the compiler and the size of the code it
produces than with the speed of the code it produces -- depending
instead on some postprocessing.
I suspect that any commercial interest that doesn't already have a
compiler in the marketplace and that needs to produce high-performance
code for AMD chips (or in a marketplace including AMD chips) will pick
the Intel compiler and then add a bit of code to tweak the cpu
indicator.
