Indeed, SQL is very useful. We've got an implementation similar to what Brazil
was planning (last I heard at least) on my game. While we haven't really
utilized the benefit of SQL to its fullest, we do have a few little neat
examples of what you can do with SQL connectivity:

We've got another thing we're working on where we can generate a graphical map
of the game with labeled objective points based on who controls them. Neat
little things like this are really need to compete with some of the MMORPGs.
Web-ization is a huge plus for players and many are motivated to play longer
if their name appears on a page (bragging rights) :)
