I've been out of town for a week with no Internet access, but I'm not
sure what I can add to this.

Ian has proposed that idea that the best way to add just about
anything large to MUX is through some sort of generic interface, and
that anything medium-to-large in size should be optional and off by
default. His concern overall seems to be that MUX is becoming too
large.

Sabbath seems to vaguely share that sentiment somewhat.

My response is usually to ponder for a moment what a generic interface
that supports everything we can and can't imagine would look like,
draw a blank, and then switch to a more concrete problem. Mapping code
to boxes in a block diagram is an well-worn problem.

On the other hand, I'm sympathetic to the desire to keep something
'tidy', so I don't mind at least making these things ./configure
options.
