The rounding to the nearest even number in the case of .5 is sometimes called "banker's rounding," which could give you some idea of why it's done. It does produce a bit more even of a distribution of results when rounding, or at least that's who it was explained in the old Turbo PASCAL helpfiles when I was in high school.
Since I'm on a flurry of activity, I want to take some time out from being a pain in the rear to say a big "Thank You" to Stephen and everyone else involved in the TinyMUX project. This hobby of yours is what allows me to pursue one of my own hobbies. I'm sure this sentiment is echoed by many list members and online gamers in general too. So I don't think it's out of place every couple of years to remind you that we all appreciate the work you've done, and we wish you the very best.
