[Tinymux] Seeking Networking Advice

The problem I have is this:
Everyone who connects to the games hosted on my machine has to set themselves keepalive--or otherwise run some kind of timer--in order to avoid their connection being dropped. I don't know if it is a problem with the cable modem, the router, the linux box, or what. I know it is not the MUX--since I have disabled idlechecking, and had it jacked up to something like a year before that. Also, this only happens to people outside the network, and not on the LAN.
I am running:
MUX 2.4.0.14 #1 [ALPHA]
Red Hat Linux version 9 (no firewall, latest kernel, etc.)
D-Link DI-604 Router (latest firmware, but old machine) (runs a virtual server and firewall that forwards specific ports)
Com-21 DoxPort 111 Cable Modem
What do I need to do to fix this problem? Or do I have to learn to live with it? I cannot replace the cable modem, since it is provided by the cable company. But I would be willing to replace the router as needed--since it does not have any kind of setting to determine a "timeout"
Thank you for any help you can offer!
